Discover the magic of Ankarana National Park and witness the spectacular sunset at the Red Tsingy – all in one unforgettable day.
🦎 This full‑day adventure from Diego Suarez plunges you into two of Madagascar’s most surreal geological landscapes – the ancient limestone cathedrals of Ankarana and the fragile red‑rock spires of Irodo Valley, all timed to catch the fiery sunset light.
You leave before dawn, driving south through a rapidly changing northern landscape where baobabs, red laterite and dry savanna unfold. The morning is spent hiking inside the astonishing tsingy formations of Ankarana National Park – a dry forest jewel packed with lemurs, chameleons, caves and suspended bridges. In the afternoon, you detour to the Red Tsingy for a completely different spectacle: delicate, still‑forming sandstone pinnacles that glow deep orange as the day ends.
This excursion is especially designed for adventurous nature lovers who want a packed, geological and wildlife‑driven day without an overnight stay.
The Experience
5:30 AM – Pick‑up at your hotel in Antsiranana / Diego Suarez. The 4‑hour drive south to Mahamasina, the entrance of Ankarana National Park, reveals how quickly the north changes. The coastal feel soon gives way to dry savanna dotted with baobabs, red laterite soil and patches of deciduous forest.
Guided hike inside Ankarana National Park – One of Madagascar’s great geological wonders, the park protects massive grey limestone tsingy shaped millimeter by millimeter over millions of years. Your local guide leads you through narrow corridors, across suspended bridges over deep chasms, and into caves where fig tree roots plunge toward underground rivers. The landscape alternates between relentless vegetation and exposed, razor‑sharp rock.
Wildlife is abundant: crowned lemurs and Sanford’s brown lemurs are frequently seen near the trails, while chameleons, leaf‑tailed geckos and endemic birds fill the surrounding dry forest. Note that the limestone holds heat fiercely – it gets very hot around noon, so early hiking pays off.
After the hike and a short rest near the park entrance, you retrace north, then veer east into the Irodo Valley. The timing is deliberate: you arrive at the Red Tsingy in the late afternoon, when the sinking sun paints the formations in shades of deep orange and rust‑red.
These red laterite and sandstone spires are the geological opposite of Ankarana’s ancient limestone. Still being sculpted by each rainy season, the Red Tsingy feels raw, tentative and almost fictional – a miniature canyonland of slender pinnacles and jagged ridges. Walking among them at sunset is the photographic highlight of the day.
After sunset, begin the return drive to Diego Suarez, arriving around 8:00 PM depending on road and traffic conditions.
