A day trip from Diego Suarez to Amber Mountain National Park: forest, waterfalls, and lemurs in a volcanic landscape with great views.
Amber Mountain National Park may as well be on another planet, after all, it rises high above the dry landscape of northern Madagascar. Nestled between extinct volcanoes, crater lakes, waterfalls and deep valleys, this lush mountain rainforest is arguably the single most biodiverse protected area on the island.
The park rises to over 1,400 meters and is home to an extraordinary wealth of wildlife, waterfalls and endemic plants — just south of Joffreville, the former colonial retreat overlooking Antsiranana Bay. The contrast between the dry savannas surrounding the massif and the cool tropical forest found inside the park makes this one of the more surprising excursions in northern Madagascar.
This is a great day trip for those who enjoy being outdoors, for hiking, photography and birdwatching enthusiasts, and it provides a well‑needed break away from the heat at the coast while learning about one of Madagascar’s prettiest national parks.
The Experience
7:00 AM: Departure from your hotel in Diego Suarez (Antsiranana). Expect a one‑hour drive to Joffreville, which climbs from the arid coast into cooler mountain landscape.
A little time will be spent exploring the sleepy hamlet of Joffreville, which was originally established as a cooler retreat for French colonial servants getting away from the humid heat in coastal resorts. Through clear days, views back across Antsiranana Bay and the Mozambique Channel are stunning.
Just outside the entrance to Amber Mountain National Park, a guided hike takes place through an interesting patchwork of ecosystems. Trails zig‑zag through dense rainforest, giant tree ferns, volcanic formations and streams located beneath lush undergrowth.
The park is most known for its wildlife. A handful of lemur species can be seen, along with colorful birds, frogs and some of Madagascar’s most extraordinary chameleons which disguise themselves as an extra layer to the forest floor.
Depending on fitness and interests, the walk can be easily adjusted to last four or five hours. The route normally goes through beautiful waterfalls, volcanic lakes and viewpoints from where you can see the surrounding landscape.
After the visit, come back to Joffreville for lunch, and head back to Diego Suarez in the afternoon.
Why Choose This Excursion
