Spot giant turtles and explore the quiet beaches, villages and scenic countryside of Nosy Sakatia.
Nosy Sakatia is a short boat ride from Nosy Be and has nothing to do with the better known islands of this archipelago. Calmer, more verdant and much less travelled, it is nicknamed as the “Island of Orchids” because of its dense greenery and tranquillity.
The most famous attraction near to the island: swimming and snorkeling with wild giant green sea turtles. This may be the most reliable area to snorkel with turtles anywhere in Nosy Be, and it is all thanks to the shallow waters around Nosy Sakatia.
Full of marine life, stunning beaches, local village culture and chilled island hopping, this private day trip is one of the most enjoyable excursions on offer from Nosy Be.
The Experience
Around 8:00 AM: Departure from your hotel in Nosy Be.
Take a short transfer to the starting point then travel by private motorboat towards Nosy Sakatia. It’s a short crossing with lovely views across the bay.
When you arrive, it is common to do some snorkeling in one of the island’s traditional turtle areas. Many of the green sea turtles inhabit these shallow waters in search of a local meal, and so can often be observed on the seagrass beds near to shore — making photography relatively easy. Wildlife is never a sure thing, but sightings are so common they are frequent.
The rest of the day is spent exploring that island itself. As there are no roads on Nosy Sakatia, much of the island is explored by foot discovering tiny fishing villages, lush greenery, areas filled with orchids and beaches that remain peaceful.
Lunch is served by the edge of the water, followed by free time to swim, snorkel or just chill on a hammock underneath some coconut trees.
Return to Nosy Be is done in the afternoon, you’ll be back at your hotel around 4:00 PM.
