Experience Reniala Forest & Honko Mangrove

If you are arriving from Anakao and your flight from Tulear is only later in the afternoon or evening, this excursion is an excellent way to make the most of your final day in southern Madagascar instead of waiting around at the port, in town or at the airport.

The experience combines two of the region’s most interesting natural attractions. First, the famous Reniala Forest, home to ancient baobabs and the unique spiny forest ecosystem found only in southern Madagascar. Later, discover the Honko Mangrove Reserve, one of Madagascar’s most successful community-led conservation projects.

Together, these two sites offer a fascinating introduction to the landscapes, wildlife and vegetation that make southwest Madagascar so different from the rest of the island.

The Experience

The excursion can begin from your hotel in Tulear, directly from Tulear Airport or from the port upon arrival from Anakao.

Many travelers arrive from Anakao around 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM, making this excursion a perfect way to fill the day before a later domestic flight to Antananarivo.

The first stop is Reniala Forest, located near Ifaty. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll explore one of Madagascar’s most unusual ecosystems. The reserve protects ancient baobabs, octopus trees, endemic birds, reptiles and the extraordinary spiny forest that exists nowhere else on Earth.

After the visit, enjoy a free lunch break by Ifaty Beach. There is time to relax by the sea, have lunch and enjoy the coastal atmosphere before continuing the excursion.

In the afternoon, continue to the Honko Mangrove Reserve. Wooden boardwalks allow visitors to explore the mangrove ecosystem while learning about its importance for coastal protection, local fisheries and biodiversity conservation.

The landscapes here are completely different from those of Reniala, creating a surprisingly diverse day before returning to Tulear Airport, the port or your hotel.

Why Choose This Experience?

Many travelers arriving from Anakao have several hours available before their domestic flight from Tulear.

Rather than waiting at the airport or spending the day in town, this excursion allows visitors to discover two of the region’s most interesting natural sites while enjoying a relaxing break by the beach.

It is an ideal option for making the most of your final day in southern Madagascar.
