3-Day Tsingy de Bemaraha Experience from Morondava

Getting to Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is an adventure in itself. Set in the deepest reaches of western Madagascar, it is a staggering array of spectacular scenery and one of the island’s most isolated parks.

Sharp limestone pinnacles of Tsingy de Bemaraha under a clear sky

It can only be reached through the crossing of rivers via ferries, along dusty tracks and by passing through remote villages where life has barely changed for generations. This means around 10 hours travel on either side of the journey from Morondava, making it one of Madagascar’s great overland journeys. In return, you will be able to visit the incredible Tsingy de Bemaraha limestone pinnacles: this UNESCO World Heritage Site remains one of Africa’s undisputed natural marathon winners.

This three-day itinerary is perfect for those looking to experience adventure, stunning landscapes and one of Madagascar’s most famous sights.

Day 1 – Morondava to Bekopaka

Morning departure from Morondava. Northbound through the arid regions of western Madagascar. The adventure involves a ferry crossing of the mighty Tsiribihina River and travels through remote savanna landscapes, baobab‑covered countryside, and quaint villages.

North again, and a second ferry across the Manambolo River paves the way towards Bekopaka, access point for the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. Arrival is late in the day to allow settling into a quiet place that you enjoy too.

Overnight: Olympe de Bemaraha or similar, dinner included. Driving time: approximately 10 hours.

Day 2 – Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park

Early breakfast and then head out to explore the stunning scenery of Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park all day. This tour will typically centre around the Petit Tsingy, a breathtaking introduction to this maze of needle‑sharp limestone spires. Suspension bridges, narrow corridors and breathtaking vistas give way to canyons that expose scenery not seen anywhere else in Madagascar.

Your local guide may discover more sections of the park based on timing and fitness levels. The park is also home to various species of lemurs, endemic birds, reptiles and unique dry forest vegetation evolved in such a harsh limestone environment. Return to Bekopaka for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 – Bekopaka to Morondava: Avenue of the Baobabs

Breakfast and then leave for the long way back to Morondava. The route covers the same remote tracks, ferry crossings and western landscapes as the outbound trip. Landing in the late afternoon will often align you with one of Madagascar’s most iconic sights: a sunset at Avenue of the Baobabs. It completes one of Madagascar’s greatest adventures as the light mellows and the silhouettes of the giant trees trace their way across a scene. Evening: returning to Morondava by road. Driving time: approximately 10 hours.

Why Choose This Experience

It is one of Africa’s most unique landscapes, and one of Madagascar’s top attractions. While this is a long haul, it is still one of the most rewarding expeditions on offer here. Only a small handful would yield this picture‑perfect scenery, arduous travel and authentic sense of adventure. For the majority of travellers this is the highlight of their Madagascar adventure.
