The Experience
Departure is around 5:00 AM from Morondava.
The track heads south through dry forests, baobab landscapes and isolated Vezo villages. The journey is an integral part of the experience and offers the chance to discover a region that few travellers take the time to explore.
Arrival at Belo sur Mer is usually after about 4 to 5 hours on the road.
The day begins with a visit to the famous dhow-building yards. Some of these traditional vessels exceed twenty metres in length and continue to be made entirely by hand, without modern equipment. Depending on the work in progress, you can observe craftsmen carving wood, assembling hulls or working on the structure of future ships destined to sail along the Malagasy coast.
The tour continues to the vast salt pans, where salt production remains largely artisanal. The evaporation ponds form huge geometric shapes in the landscape and provide excellent photo opportunities while giving an insight into one of the region’s main economic activities.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant, followed by free time to stroll through the village, watch the fishermen return or simply soak up the peaceful atmosphere of the shoreline.
Departure from Belo sur Mer is scheduled for around 3:00 PM, arriving back in Morondava in the early evening.
