Day 1 β Antananarivo | Arrival & Capital Exploration
Welcome to Madagascar! Your local team will be waiting for you at Ivato International Airport and driving you to your hotel in central Antananarivo. The vibrant capital is a blend of ancient hilltop palaces, fragrant spice markets and colonial architecture hugging terraced hills. Afternoon free β settle in and get ready for some adventure! Day 2 β Antananarivo β Andasibe | 140 km / 4h
Cross the highlands east, and the emerald rice paddies and small bamboo huts yield to a green belt of eastern rainforest. Once settled, head to the Mitsinjo Association Reserve and support this local initiative conserving endemic lemurs, rare orchids and colourful avian life. After dark, join a guided walk in nearby Voimma Reserve, where you may spot mouse lemurs and almost invisibly camouflaged chameleons and frogs amongst the foliage. Day 3 β Andasibe | The Rainforest Heart
Get up to the eerie sounds of Indri (world's largest lemur, only found in Madagascar) high overhead. Morning visit to the Analamazaotra Special Reserve (Andasibe National Park), which is arguably one of the best areas in terms of lemur spotting rates and botany diversity on the island. In the afternoon visit to Vakona Private Reserve ("Lemur Island") where you can meet black-and-white ruffed lemurs, other lemur species and gentle sifakas up-close in this beautiful wildlife reserve. Overnight at Longoza Ecolodge or similar.
Day 4 β Andasibe β Antananarivo | 140 km (~4 h)
Travel to the secretive Maromizaha Reserve, a rainforest refuge rich in untouched ecosystems and community-led conservation initiatives, before heading back to the capital. Search for crowned sifakas plus leafβtailed geckos and tuatara in the rainforest, dozens of endemic bird species in bird's-eye view. Afternoon highland descent ends the rainforest section. Day 5 β Antananarivo β Diego Suarez | Flight + 60 km (~1.5 h)
An internal morning flight to Madagascar's northern region. Travel to Amber Mountain National Park β a cool, overcast cloudβforest rising from the arid northern plains. Wander shady tracks around waterfalls, crater lakes and groves of ancient tree ferns. Search for endemic birds, vibrant chameleons, and the elusive Amber Mountain dwarf lemur. Overnight at Nature Lodge Joffreville or similar.
Day 6 β Diego Suarez β Red Tsingy β Ankarana | 160 km (~4 hours)
Drive west to Red Tsingy, scene of a near-sci-fi world of laterite peaks and valleys carved by millenniums of erosion. Head north to Ankarana National Park β a site of extensive karst topography with cave systems, underground rivers and secret caves which is teeming with crowned lemurs, Sanford's brown lemurs and many endemic reptiles. Day 7 β Ankarana β Diego Suarez | 120 km (~4 hours)
Ankarana National Park: full-day hike across natural stone bridges and scramble through shady canyons, with suspended trails above dry riverbeds. Explore pilgrims, sacred caves and micro-ecosystems in one of the country's top geologically hallmark reserves. Afternoon return to Diego Suarez (Antsiranana). Overnight at GA Hotel 4* or similar.
Day 8 β Diego Suarez β Antananarivo β Toliara | Domestic flights
Fly back to Antananarivo and onto Toliara (Tulear), access point for the sun-drenched southwest coast. Private transfers from airport to your hotel. Evening free. The climate and landscape change rapidly at the entrance of Madagascar's dry ecological zone. Overnight at Victory Hotel or similar.
Day 9 β Toliara β Ranohira (Isalo) | 230 km (~6 h)
Travel inland through pastures and spiny thickets to the Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park, an important dry forest corridor for Appert's greenbul as well as the critically endangered Berthe's mouse lemur. Then continue on to Ranohira which lies under the cliffs of Isalo on steep sandstone rocks. Overnight at H1 Isalo Hotel or similar.
Day 10 β Isalo National Park | Canyons & Natural Oases
Full day in Isalo National Park β sometimes called "the Utah of Madagascar". Trekking through sculptured stone gorges, visiting secret natural pools and walking through palm-underlined oases. Here the park has created microclimates in which troupes of curious ring-tailed lemurs, Verreaux's sifakas and myriad birds and insects thrive. Something of the great geological and ecological stories of the expedition. Overnight at H1 Isalo Hotel or similar.
Day 11 β Isalo β Toliara β Antananarivo | Road transfer + Fly
Return to Toliara in the morning and then take a domestic flight from Toliara to Antananarivo. Free afternoon for local craft markets, historical sites or rest before the journey into the western portion of your adventure! Overnight at Le Chat'o Park Hotel or similar.
Day 12 β Antananarivo β Morondava β Kirindy | Flight + 90 km (~3 h)
Fly west to Morondava, the gateway to the west coast of Madagascar. Visit the Avenue of the Baobabs, a great ancient giant Adansonia grandidieri trees casting their huge shadows over the ochre-red earth. Next: off to Kirindy Forest β Madagascar's last great area of dry deciduous forest. A night walk in search of the elusive fossa, Goodman's mouse lemur and nocturnal reptiles after dark. Overnight at Relais du Kirindy or similar.
Day 13 β Kirindy β Bekopaka | 160 km (~8 h)
Early morning walk to find rare primates and learn about western ecosystem conservation in dry forest. Two conventional ferry crossings on a scenic drive north β but the highlights are the Tsiribihina River and Manambolo River. Proceed across rural scenery, baobab forests and small villages prior to arriving at the gateway town of Bekopaka. Overnight at Olympe de Bemaraha Hotel or similar.
Day 14 β Bekopaka β Tsingy de Bemaraha | 30 km (~3 h)
Now introducing: Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Cross suspension bridges high above serrated limestone spikes, enter caves and see endemic flora and fauna adapting to this violent environment. The evolutionary riches of Madagascar, uncovered on guided treks. Overnight at Olympe de Bemaraha Hotel or similar.
Day 15 β Bekopaka β Morondava | 250 km (~10-11 hours)
Start the return trip south to Morondava. Drive up a long river valley road with sprawling plains of dry grass at one end and lush forests near riverbanks all along the way. Stopping for sunset in the late afternoon at the Avenue of the Baobabs, where ancient trees are set aglow against an almost black sky. Overnight at Laguna Beach Hotel or similar.
Day 16 β Morondava | Beach Vibes & Culture
A free day on the quiet beaches of the Mozambique Channel. Sunbathing on the beach, visiting local fishing villages and experiencing indigenous crafts, or optional boat tours and cultural activities. A pleasant break to absorb the experience so far. Overnight at Laguna Beach Hotel or similar.
Day 17 β Morondava β Antananarivo | By air
