Ambatomilo

Ambatomilo Beach – white sand, turquoise lagoon and untouched wilderness on the south‑western coast of Madagascar

Hidden along Madagascar’s remote south‑western coast, Ambatomilo Beach is one of those places that still feels completely untouched. Kilometres of white sand, shallow turquoise waters and almost no buildings give the area a wild, isolated atmosphere that is increasingly hard to find. For many travellers, it is quite possibly the most beautiful beach in Madagascar.

Ambatomilo lies about 5 hours north of Toliara by 4×4, or about 5 hours south of Morombe, depending on track conditions and tides. The journey can be slow and sandy, but the landscapes crossed – Vezo villages, baobabs and wild coastline – are all part of the experience.

Once you arrive, the pace slows immediately.

The lagoon seems endless, especially at low tide when the sea retreats leaving wide reflections on the wet sand. Traditional pirogues glide slowly across the horizon while fishermen mend their nets near the village.

That said, Ambatomilo is above all a destination of pure relaxation. If you are looking for lots of activities, nightlife or days packed with excursions, the place might feel too quiet. Here, days are spent swimming, walking aimlessly along the beach, reading in the shade and enjoying the silence.

One of the few possible excursions is a visit to the nearby Mikea Forest, known for its baobabs, endemic birds and the Mikea communities living in the region.

Geography and landscapes

Ambatomilo sits on Madagascar’s south‑western coast, about 5 hours’ drive north of Toliara or south of Morombe. The village stretches along a narrow coastal strip between the turquoise lagoon and the open ocean, with an almost endless white sandy beach.

The lagoon is protected by an offshore coral reef, creating calm, shallow waters perfect for swimming and relaxing. The landscape is dominated by dry vegetation typical of south‑western Madagascar, with baobabs and spiny forest.

Activities

  • Long walks on the nearly endless white sand beach
  • Swimming in the shallow turquoise lagoon
  • Relaxing and sunbathing far from crowded beaches
  • Watching Vezo fishermen return with their traditional pirogues
  • Photographing sunsets along the coast
  • Exploring nearby Vezo fishing villages
  • Visiting the nearby Mikea Forest and its communities
  • Birdwatching in the coastal dry forest
  • Observing the lagoon’s colour changes throughout the day

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Ambatomilo generally runs from April to December during the dry season, when the weather is sunny, the sea is calm and swimming conditions are ideal. Between January and March, the rainy season brings higher humidity and occasional rain, although the landscape becomes greener.

Practical tips

  • Access is by 4×4 only; allow around 5 hours from Toliara or Morombe.
  • Bring everything you need, as shops are very limited.
  • Sun protection, a hat and plenty of water are essential.
