Departure from Ivato River Lodge, near Anjozorozoro, for an exciting electric fat bike journey to the remote village of Sakaivo, in the heart of the Zafimaniry region. A unique experience combining nature, culture and adventure on two wheels.
Departure is at 7:00 AM from Ivato River Lodge. During the austral winter, morning temperatures rarely exceed 10 °C, while in the afternoon they often exceed 20 °C. It is important to be well prepared for these temperature changes and to bring at least 2 litres of water per person.
After a brief briefing, the route begins on electric fat bike towards Antoetra. The journey takes about 1.5 hours on dirt roads in poor condition. The electric assistance greatly reduces the effort, allowing you to enjoy the landscape without getting exhausted.
From Antoetra you continue by bike to the Laibury Viewpoint, where you leave the bikes and descend on foot to Sakaivo. This walk takes between 1 and 1.5 hours with a drop of about 700 metres.
Important note: reaching Sakaivo on foot from Antoetra usually requires a round-trip walk of about 6/7 hours. The use of electric fat bikes significantly reduces the time and effort of the approach, limiting the walking part to the final descent and ascent section.
Discovering Sakaivo
Upon arriving at Sakaivo, you will discover a traditional village of the Zafimaniry ethnic group, famous for their carved wooden architecture without nails. Activities include:
- Walking through the village, admiring traditional wooden houses with carved details
- Possible meeting with the village chief, if available
- Time to explore and interact with the inhabitants and learn about their way of life
For the more adventurous, there are optional extensions:
- Atetezandotra: +2 hours round trip
- Faliarivo: +4 hours total walking
Simple accommodation is available in a local house in Sakaivo for those who wish to experience a deeper cultural immersion.
The return journey follows the same route: walking up to Laibury and returning by electric fat bike to Ivato River Lodge, arriving at sunset.

It is the perfect combination of adventure, nature and culture. Electric fat bikes allow you to access remote landscapes without the physical exhaustion of a long hike.
